Comprehensive Allergy Screening

Clinical Significance

Allergies affect around 1 in 3 people in the UK at some point, and unexplained symptoms — rhinitis, hives, gut upset, wheeze, reactions to unknown foods — can take years to pin down by trial and error. Our Comprehensive Allergy Screening uses the ALEX platform, one of the most advanced multiplex allergy tests available, measuring IgE responses to around 300 allergens including 218 molecular components: foods, pollens, moulds, animal dander, dust mites, latex and insect venoms, plus Total IgE, from a single blood sample.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How is this different from skin-prick testing?

Skin-prick testing checks a limited selection of allergens, requires stopping antihistamines and involves provoking small reactions. The ALEX blood test screens ~300 allergens from one sample, works while taking antihistamines, and analyses molecular components — identifying the specific protein you react to, which often has real clinical significance.

Q. Why do molecular components matter?

Because they distinguish serious risk from cross-reactivity. For example, someone "allergic to peanut" who reacts only to the pollen-related component Ara h 8 typically experiences mild oral symptoms, while reactivity to the storage protein Ara h 2 is associated with systemic reactions. This precision helps clinicians judge risk far better than a simple "peanut positive".

Q. Can this test diagnose food intolerance?

No — and honest clinics are clear about this. IgE testing detects allergic sensitisation. Intolerances (such as lactose intolerance) do not involve IgE and will not show here. Nor does a positive IgE alone equal clinical allergy — results must always be interpreted alongside your actual symptoms, which is what your report and, where needed, an allergy specialist will do.

Q. Is this suitable for children?

The ALEX test can be performed on children, and a single draw covering 300 allergens is often kinder than multiple skin tests. Please contact us before booking so we can advise on suitability for your child's age.

Q. What should I do with the results?

Your written report maps your sensitisation profile. For significant findings — especially food or venom reactivity with a history of serious reactions — we will advise GP referral to an NHS allergy clinic. For airborne allergens, results often directly inform practical avoidance and treatment options your GP or pharmacist can support.

Preparation

Clinical Protocol

No fasting is required, and unlike skin-prick testing you do NOT need to stop antihistamines — blood IgE testing is unaffected by them. Bring notes on your symptom history and any suspected triggers; the more context, the more useful your report.

Comprehensive Allergy Blood Test — ALEX 300 Allergen Screening in London

One blood sample, around 300 allergens. Our Comprehensive Allergy Screening uses the advanced ALEX multiplex platform — 218 molecular components across foods, pollens, moulds, animals, dust mites, latex and insect venoms, plus Total IgE — with no need to stop antihistamines. Nurse-led at our South Kensington clinic, results in around four working days.

What's Included

  • ALEX multiplex panel (~300 allergens)
  • 218 molecular allergen components
  • Food, inhalant, pollen, mould and animal allergens
  • Dust mites, latex and insect venoms
  • Total IgE
  • Written report by a registered nurse

Not Included (Upgrade Available)

  • Food intolerance testing (non-IgE)
  • Skin-prick or patch testing
  • Allergy treatment or immunotherapy
  • Formal allergist consultation (we signpost where needed)

Who Is This Test For?

  • People with unexplained recurring reactions or rashes
  • Hay fever sufferers wanting their specific triggers identified
  • Those with suspected food allergies seeking clarity
  • People whose antihistamines prevent skin-prick testing
  • Anyone wanting a complete sensitisation profile in one visit

Why molecular allergy testing is a step change

Traditional allergy tests answer "does this extract provoke a response?" Molecular diagnostics answer the more useful question: "which exact protein are you sensitised to?" That distinction separates genuine primary allergy from harmless cross-reactivity, predicts whether reactions are likely to be mild and local or potentially systemic, and identifies patterns — such as pollen-food syndromes — that explain years of confusing symptoms in a single report.

From 300 data points to a practical plan

A large panel is only useful if it is interpreted well. Your written nurse report organises results by allergen family, highlights clinically significant sensitisations, and distinguishes findings that warrant specialist referral from those that call for simple avoidance measures or standard hay fever management. Where a result suggests genuine anaphylaxis risk, we say so plainly and signpost the NHS allergy pathway through your GP.

One visit, no needles marathon

The entire panel runs from a single standard blood draw at our South Kensington clinic — no grids of skin pricks, no stopping your antihistamines, no repeat visits. Results return in around four working days through our secure portal. For families, testing children in one draw rather than dozens of pricks is often reason enough to choose this route.

Important: This screening service does not replace consultation with your GP. If you have symptoms that concern you, please speak to your GP or call NHS 111. Our registered nurse will clearly signpost you to appropriate NHS care if any result requires follow-up.

"Our Comprehensive Allergy Screening provides the comprehensive insight you need to take control of your health. Every biomarker is carefully analysed and results are reviewed by our clinical team."
