Uric Acid Blood test

Uric Acid Blood Testing

Uric Acid blood testing is used to evaluate the level of uric acid in the bloodstream. Normally, uric acid dissolves in the bloodstream, is filtered by the kidneys, and is then expelled through urine. However, certain health conditions and lifestyle choices can lead to either excessive or insufficient levels. This may occur if your body produces too much uric acid or cannot remove it efficiently.

Why do you need this test?

Your medical practitioner may recommend a Uric Acid test if you show signs of abnormal levels, such as symptoms of gout or a history of kidney stones. The test can also help assess kidney function or monitor the effects of medications influencing uric acid levels. Additionally, it may be included as part of routine health checks.

Elevated uric acid levels don’t always cause symptoms, but monitoring them can be a proactive step towards maintaining good health. This test can be added to our private health assessments for a more comprehensive evaluation.

Procedure of the test

Before the test

No unique preparation is needed. Staying hydrated can make the blood collection process smoother. If you have a family history of health conditions or other concerns, discuss them with your healthcare provider beforehand.

The test process

The test involves taking a small blood sample, usually from your arm. The process is quick and straightforward, with your comfort being the top priority. Once collected, the sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Receiving the result

Your results will typically be available within a few days. If irregularities are detected, a medical practitioner will provide a detailed explanation and discuss the next steps with you.

Understanding Your Results

Your results are presented in an easy-to-understand report, with clear explanations for each test outcome. Results are flagged using three categories:

  • Amber: Slightly outside the normal range, requiring monitoring or minor adjustments.
  • Red: Significantly outside the normal range, indicating a need for further investigation or medical advice from a medical practitioner.
  • Green: Within the recommended range for your age and sex.

If flagged as amber or red, the report will include recommendations, whether that means lifestyle changes, ongoing monitoring, or consulting a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

This test evaluates how much uric acid is present in your blood. Elevated levels, known as hyperuricaemia, can indicate conditions such as gout or kidney stones. Factors such as diet, age, and genetics may also influence uric acid levels.

Currently, the Uric Acid test is not available for home testing. It must be conducted in-person by a trained professional at one of our clinics across the UK and Ireland. This ensures accuracy and a quick turnaround for results.

Common causes of hyperuricaemia include:

  • Obesity
  • Family history of gout or kidney stones
  • A diet rich in purine-heavy foods
  • Dehydration
  • Medications like diuretics and aspirin
  • Alcohol consumption (especially beer)
  • Certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease, metabolic syndrome, or hypothyroidism

Samples are processed by leading UK laboratories partnered with our clinics. Once analysed, results are securely sent to our in-house team, who compile a personalised report for you.

Yes, a Uric Acid test can be added as an individual test or as part of a broader health package.

The Uric Acid test is not routine and is typically recommended for individuals with symptoms of gout, kidney stones, or related conditions. While the test is safe for most people, some may experience minor bruising or discomfort from the needle, which usually resolves quickly.

If your results fall outside the normal range (amber or red flags), you will receive tailored advice on the next steps. This may include dietary or lifestyle adjustments, further monitoring, or a consultation with your GP for a more detailed evaluation.

No fasting is required. You can eat and drink as usual before your appointment. Detailed preparation instructions will be provided when you book.
