What is gluten?

Gluten is a protein commonly found in any of these types of cereal: barley, rye and wheat. Any food with rye, barley or wheat in it definitely has gluten. Examples are bread, cakes, most breakfast cereals and pasta. Gluten can be found in many other foods, such as alcoholic drinks, sweets, sauces, and ready-to-eat meals.

Gluten is sometimes used as a binding agent in food because of its ability to add a firm and stretchy texture to it that will stop it from falling apart easily. A perfect example of this is bread dough. Hence, gluten substitutes usually come in a less stretchy and brittle texture than gluten.

Gluten intolerance

It is common to see gluten intolerance in people, and it can lead to little discomfort or serious health issues.

Celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disease caused by ingesting foods that have gluten in them, is the most serious form of gluten intolerance. This condition causes the body to attack its own tissues whenever anything with gluten is eaten, which can damage the small intestine.

Even though celiac disease is severe, it is not as common as gluten sensitivity, which is not a celiac reaction to gluten, even though it causes uncomfortable symptoms.

Can you develop an Intolerance to Gluten at a Later Age?

There is definitely a possibility of becoming intolerant to gluten all of a sudden when you have never experienced something like that in the past. Some people experience certain symptoms from time to time with no severity as they get older, while some people just grow intolerant all of a sudden. The risk of being Intolerant to gluten depends on genetic factors.

Do I Need to Get a Gluten Intolerance Test?

With no symptoms of gluten intolerance, there is nothing to suggest that gluten could potentially cause harm to the body; hence, there will be no need to remove gluten from your diet. Also, gluten is present in many foods, so removing it entirely from one’s diet is usually difficult, not to mention that gluten substitutes are way more expensive.

A gluten intolerance test can put your mind to rest on whether gluten can harm your health or not. This will save you the trouble of making uncomfortable dietary changes based on assumptions that may not be right.

An easy way to know whether your body is having difficulties digesting gluten is to run an easy blood sample test. It is necessary for celiac disease to be ruled out.
