Chlamydia is a common type of bacterial infection which is caused by chlamydia trachomatis. It can be treated with the right medications. This sexually transmitted infection can lead to several health complications if left untreated.
Unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person is how this bacterium is spread from one person to the other. The major ways to get chlamydia are:
Chlamydia often appears asymptomatic in most people, but some people may observe the symptoms below:
If you feel that you may have chlamydia or notice any of the symptoms, you should get tested as soon as possible. If left untreated, it can result in pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and other long-term health issues.
If you have unprotected sexual intercourse, you should get a test done after 2 weeks or if you notice any of the symptoms of chlamydia.
A Chlamydia test can be done through either a swap or a urine sample test. The samples are then sent to our private laboratory for analysis.
Test results can take anywhere from 6 hours, which is the fast-track screening method, to 48 hours, which is the regular screening method. Once the test is ready, our team will email you the result.
If you test positive for chlamydia, we follow up with a call or an email to discuss how to get treated.
The treatment plan for chlamydia is usually a single dosage or course of antibiotics. During your treatment, you should stay away from any form of sexual activity for 7 days after you and your partner are done with the medications.
We usually would not recommend a confirmation test for a simple genital chlamydia infection except if you fall under any of these categories:
If you are exposed to the chlamydia bacteria through sexual intercourse with an infected person, then yes, you can get chlamydia again. A good way to avoid this is to make sure that your partner has completed treatment before resuming sexual activities with them.
For a new partner, do not perform any form of sexual act, be it oral, vaginal or anal, without the use of protection. Before having unprotected sex, make sure that you both carry out a proper sexual health test.
