Assessment of cortisol levels and adrenal function to understand stress impact on health.

Understanding Stress & Anxiety

Chronic stress is not "just mental" — it is a whole-body physiological state with measurable consequences. Sustained activation of the stress axis raises cortisol, which over months and years drives blood pressure upward, pushes blood sugar towards the diabetic range, promotes central weight gain, disturbs sleep architecture, suppresses immunity and accelerates cardiovascular wear. UK surveys suggest three-quarters of adults have felt overwhelmed by stress within the past year.

Blood testing serves two honest purposes here. First, it quantifies the physical toll: HbA1c, lipids, blood pressure and inflammatory markers reveal whether stress is translating into metabolic damage — information that motivates change more powerfully than any general warning. Second, it excludes the medical mimics: thyroid overactivity produces anxiety, palpitations and insomnia indistinguishable from stress; anaemia and B12 deficiency produce the exhaustion attributed to burnout.

What blood tests cannot do — and we are clear about this — is diagnose anxiety disorders or depression, which deserve proper clinical assessment through your GP, with effective treatments available. Screening complements that pathway by mapping the physiological side, so both the mental and physical dimensions of stress get the attention they warrant.

Diagnostic Path

Identifying clinical markers associated with stress & anxiety requires a high-resolution laboratory profile. Below are the recommended diagnostic assessments specifically calibrated for this concern.

Our Advanced Full Body MOT covers the stress-relevant panel comprehensively: thyroid function (the great anxiety mimic), HbA1c and glucose, full lipid profile, blood pressure, full blood count and iron studies (fatigue mimics), plus Vitamin D and B12 — with every marker interpreted in a written nurse report. The Platinum packages add hs-CRP inflammation and cardiac markers for a fuller picture of physiological load.

When to See Your GP Urgently

Screening is for people without acute symptoms. If any of the following apply, please seek medical care first:

  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide — call 999, the Samaritans (116 123) or your GP today
  • Panic with chest pain — call 999 (never assume it is "just anxiety")
  • Anxiety with weight loss, tremor and racing heart — see your GP (possible thyroid)
  • Inability to function at work or home — see your GP; effective help exists

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a blood test measure my stress levels?

Not directly in a meaningful way — single cortisol readings fluctuate too much through the day to summarise chronic stress. What testing does well is measure the downstream physical effects (glucose, lipids, blood pressure, inflammation) and exclude conditions that mimic anxiety, especially thyroid overactivity.

Why do my anxiety symptoms need a thyroid check?

Because hyperthyroidism produces palpitations, restlessness, insomnia, irritability and weight loss — a near-perfect impersonation of an anxiety disorder — and responds to entirely different treatment. It is one of the most worthwhile exclusions in medicine, and it is included in every one of our MOT panels.

What physical damage does chronic stress actually cause?

The evidence links sustained stress to hypertension, insulin resistance, central weight gain, elevated cholesterol and cardiovascular events. Your screening quantifies where you stand on each — often the wake-up call, or the reassurance, that changes behaviour.

Screening aside, what actually helps?

The unglamorous, well-evidenced list: regular exercise (as effective as medication for mild-moderate anxiety in several trials), sleep protection, alcohol moderation, breathing practices, and talking therapies via NHS Talking Therapies — self-referral, no GP needed. Your report focuses on the physical levers within your control.
