Prostate HealthScreening

Comprehensive prostate health assessment including PSA testing and advanced prostate cancer screening protocols.

Understanding Prostate Health

The prostate is a small gland with an outsized place in men's health. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in UK men — over 52,000 diagnoses a year — while benign prostate enlargement affects the majority of men over 60 to some degree. Both begin quietly, which is why structured monitoring from mid-life is a rational choice for many men.

The UK deliberately has no national prostate screening programme: PSA testing involves genuine trade-offs, catching some cancers early while also flagging many benign conditions. That places the decision with informed individuals. What strengthens the case for testing: age over 50, a father or brother with prostate cancer (roughly doubling risk), and Black ethnicity, where risk is around double and starts earlier — from about 45.

The most useful approach treats PSA as a trend, not a verdict. A baseline in your forties or fifties makes later readings meaningfully interpretable — a rising trajectory says far more than any single number. Combining Total with Free PSA improves interpretation further, and advanced options such as Stockholm3 add genetic context where deeper assessment is wanted.

Diagnostic Path

Identifying clinical markers associated with prostate health requires a high-resolution laboratory profile. Below are the recommended diagnostic assessments specifically calibrated for this concern.

Our Prostate Cancer Risk & Health Screening (£249) pairs Total and Free PSA with a comprehensive 40+ marker men's health panel, so your prostate markers arrive with full metabolic context. For men wanting the most advanced blood-based assessment, the Stockholm3 test combines protein markers, genetic analysis and clinical data in a validated risk score. The Platinum Full Body MOT for Men includes PSA within our broadest health screen.

When to See Your GP Urgently

Screening is for people without acute symptoms. If any of the following apply, please seek medical care first:

  • Blood in urine or semen — see your GP
  • Difficulty passing urine, or complete inability — urgent care if unable to urinate
  • Bone pain with urinary symptoms — see your GP promptly
  • Unexplained weight loss with urinary changes — see your GP

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I have a PSA test?

It is a personal, informed decision — which is exactly how UK guidance frames it. Testing is most valuable for men over 50, men over 45 with family history or Black ethnicity, and men who want a baseline for future comparison. Our report explains your result honestly, including the limitations.

My PSA is raised — do I have cancer?

Usually not. Benign enlargement, infection, recent exercise or ejaculation all raise PSA. The Free:Total ratio helps clarify, and your GP can arrange repeat testing or MRI. A raised PSA is a prompt for assessment, never a diagnosis.

What is the Stockholm3 test?

An advanced blood test combining PSA, additional protein markers and over 100 genetic markers in a validated algorithm. In studies of tens of thousands of men it improved detection of significant cancers while reducing unnecessary biopsies. It suits men who want deeper risk characterisation than PSA alone.

How often should I re-test?

For most men who choose PSA monitoring, every one to two years is typical, adjusted for age, risk and baseline level. Your written report will suggest a sensible interval.
