Understanding Heart Disease Risk

Coronary heart disease remains one of the UK's biggest killers — responsible for around 66,000 deaths a year — yet cardiologists describe it as largely preventable, because its drivers are measurable decades ahead of any event. Cholesterol particles, blood pressure, blood sugar and inflammation write the story of your arteries year by year; testing lets you read it while the ending can still be changed.

Family history deserves particular respect here. A first-degree relative with early heart disease (father before 55, mother before 65) roughly doubles your own risk, and often signals inherited factors — most notably Lipoprotein(a), a genetic cholesterol particle elevated in one in five people, and familial hypercholesterolaemia, which affects 1 in 250 but is diagnosed in only a fraction. Both are identifiable with the right blood tests; neither appears in a standard cholesterol check.

Modern risk assessment therefore goes beyond "total cholesterol": particle counts (ApoB), the ApoB/ApoA1 ratio, Lp(a), triglycerides, HbA1c and high-sensitivity CRP together build a picture that standard testing genuinely cannot see. For anyone with family history — or anyone who simply wants clarity — this is among the highest-value screening in medicine.

Diagnostic Path

Identifying clinical markers associated with heart disease risk requires a high-resolution laboratory profile. Below are the recommended diagnostic assessments specifically calibrated for this concern.

Our Advanced Cardiovascular Risk Screening (£499) measures the complete modern panel: full lipid profile, Apolipoproteins A1 and B, Lipoprotein(a), high-sensitivity CRP and Lp-PLA2, plus blood pressure and a formal risk score. For broader context, every Full Body MOT includes lipids, HbA1c and blood pressure, and the Platinum packages add the cardiac strain marker NT-proBNP. All results arrive with a written nurse report your GP can act on directly.

When to See Your GP Urgently

Screening is for people without acute symptoms. If any of the following apply, please seek medical care first:

  • Chest pain, tightness or pressure — call 999
  • Breathlessness on mild exertion or lying flat — urgent GP review
  • Fainting or palpitations with dizziness — see your GP urgently
  • Sudden severe headache or one-sided weakness — call 999

Frequently Asked Questions

My parent had a heart attack young — what should I test?

Exactly the scenario advanced testing serves. A full lipid panel plus Lp(a) (strongly inherited), ApoB and HbA1c characterises how much of your parent's risk you carry. Testing once in your thirties or forties gives decades of runway to act on the answer.

What cholesterol numbers actually matter?

Contemporary cardiology looks past total cholesterol to non-HDL cholesterol and ApoB (particle number), triglycerides and the HDL context. Your report presents all of them with plain-English interpretation rather than a single misleading figure.

Can I lower my risk without medication?

Substantially, for most people: dietary change, regular aerobic exercise, weight management, not smoking and moderating alcohol all move the markers. Where numbers remain high — particularly with genetic contributors — statins via your GP are well-evidenced. Re-testing shows objectively what your efforts achieve.

Is this better than the NHS Health Check?

It is deeper, not a replacement. The free NHS check (every five years from 40) covers the basics well. Our panel adds the inherited and inflammatory markers — Lp(a), ApoB, hs-CRP, Lp-PLA2 — that change management for a meaningful minority of people.
