Fertility & Reproductive HealthScreening
Comprehensive fertility assessment including hormone analysis and reproductive health markers.
Understanding Fertility & Reproductive Health
Around one in seven UK couples experiences difficulty conceiving, and in roughly 40% of cases contributing factors exist on both sides. Behind much of it lies hormonal signalling: ovulation depends on precisely sequenced FSH, LH and oestradiol; sperm production on the same pituitary hormones driving testosterone. When conception is proving difficult, hormone assessment is one of the most informative early steps for both partners.
For women, blood testing can indicate whether ovulation is likely occurring, flag PCOS patterns (a raised LH:FSH ratio with elevated androgens — PCOS affects up to one in ten women and is a leading, treatable cause of subfertility), reveal prolactin excess that suppresses ovulation, and detect thyroid dysfunction, which even at subclinical levels is associated with reduced fertility and early pregnancy loss.
For men — involved in around half of all fertility difficulty — hormonal testing (testosterone, FSH, LH, prolactin) identifies endocrine contributors, although semen analysis through a GP remains the essential companion investigation. Pre-conception screening for immunity (rubella, varicella) and inherited blood conditions adds a further layer of preparation many couples value.

Diagnostic Path
Identifying clinical markers associated with fertility & reproductive health requires a high-resolution laboratory profile. Below are the recommended diagnostic assessments specifically calibrated for this concern.
Our Female Hormonal Health Screening maps the complete ovulatory axis — Oestradiol, FSH, LH, Prolactin, Testosterone, SHBG and Free Androgen Index — ideally timed to days 2–5 of the cycle. The Male Hormonal Health Screening assesses the equivalent male axis. For pre-conception preparation, the Antenatal Infection & Immunity Screening covers rubella and varicella immunity, haemoglobinopathy carrier status, thyroid and infection serology — information most useful before pregnancy begins.
When to See Your GP Urgently
Screening is for people without acute symptoms. If any of the following apply, please seek medical care first:
- No conception after 12 months of trying (6 months if over 35) — see your GP for formal fertility assessment
- Absent periods for 3+ months (not pregnant) — see your GP
- Severe pelvic pain — see your GP promptly
- Testicular lump or swelling — see your GP this week
Frequently Asked Questions
When should we seek help for fertility?
NHS guidance: after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse, or 6 months if the female partner is over 35. Blood screening can sensibly run earlier — identifying an ovulatory or hormonal issue sooner shortens the path to the right help.
Can these tests tell me my ovarian reserve?
Our panel assesses the ovulatory hormone axis; formal reserve testing (AMH, antral follicle count) is arranged through fertility clinics. A raised early-cycle FSH can suggest declining reserve, which your report would flag for GP discussion.
What male factors show in blood tests?
Low testosterone with its pituitary context (FSH, LH), raised prolactin, and by extension pituitary or testicular patterns. Blood testing complements — never replaces — semen analysis, which your GP can arrange free of charge.
Why screen for infections before pregnancy?
Because timing is everything: rubella and chickenpox vaccines cannot be given during pregnancy, so discovering non-immunity beforehand allows vaccination when it is safe. Carrier screening for sickle cell and thalassaemia similarly informs choices best made early.
