Erectile Dysfunction (ED)Screening
A targeted clinical pathway focusing on vascular health, endothelial function, and endocrine markers linked to erection quality and performance.
Understanding Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
Erectile dysfunction affects around half of men over 40 to some degree, yet it remains one of the most under-investigated conditions in men's health — the average man waits more than two years before seeking help. That delay matters, because ED is frequently a signal of something else: the penile arteries are among the narrowest in the body, so vascular disease often shows here years before it affects the heart.
The physical causes of ED are well mapped: atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction (the most common in men over 40), diabetes and pre-diabetes, low testosterone, thyroid dysfunction, raised prolactin and medication side-effects. Psychological contributors — stress, anxiety, low mood — are equally real and often intertwined. A structured blood work-up is the recognised first step because it efficiently separates these threads.
The clinical logic is straightforward: if blood tests reveal a vascular or hormonal contributor, treating it addresses the root cause and frequently improves wider health at the same time. If tests are normal, that redirects attention productively — towards sleep, psychology, relationship factors or medication review — without months of guesswork.
Risk Indicators
- Difficulty maintaining erections
- Inconsistent rigidity
- Morning erection loss
- Vascular performance concerns
- Erectional dysfunction

Diagnostic Path
Identifying clinical markers associated with erectile dysfunction (ed) requires a high-resolution laboratory profile. Below are the recommended diagnostic assessments specifically calibrated for this concern.
Our dedicated Erectile Dysfunction Blood Screening (£349) covers the complete physical work-up in a single sample: full lipid profile and HbA1c for vascular and diabetic causes, thyroid function, total and free testosterone with SHBG and Free Androgen Index, prolactin and PSA. The Advanced Cardiovascular Risk Screening adds deeper arterial markers (ApoB, Lp(a), hs-CRP) for men where vascular risk is the leading question.
When to See Your GP Urgently
Screening is for people without acute symptoms. If any of the following apply, please seek medical care first:
- Sudden painful or prolonged erection (priapism) — emergency care immediately
- ED accompanied by chest pain or breathlessness on exertion — see your GP promptly
- ED with visual changes or headaches — see your GP (possible pituitary cause)
- New ED after starting a medication — discuss with your GP or pharmacist
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do blood tests before trying ED tablets?
ED medication treats the symptom, not the cause. UK guidance recommends assessing cardiovascular risk, glucose and testosterone in men with persistent ED precisely because the underlying condition — often vascular or metabolic — carries its own health consequences if left unaddressed. Many men do both: treat symptoms while correcting the cause.
Is ED really connected to heart disease?
Yes — this link is well established. Vasculogenic ED precedes coronary symptoms by three to five years on average, which makes it an early-warning opportunity. The lipid and glucose testing in our panel is exactly what that warning warrants.
How is low testosterone involved?
Testosterone supports libido, erectile tissue health and response to ED treatment. Around one in five men with ED has a significant hormonal contributor. We measure free testosterone — the active fraction — not just the total, plus prolactin, which can suppress the whole axis.
What if my results are all normal?
That is a genuinely valuable outcome. Normal metabolic and hormonal results point towards psychological contributors or medication effects — both very treatable through your GP. You will have skipped months of uncertainty.
