Cognitive & Brain HealthScreening
Assess neurovascular integrity and metabolic factors influencing memory, focus, and long-term brain resilience.
Understanding Cognitive & Brain Health
Brain health in later life is written decades earlier — and much of the script is vascular and metabolic. Research including the landmark Lancet Commission on dementia prevention estimates that around 45% of dementia risk is attributable to modifiable factors: blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, obesity, smoking, alcohol, hearing loss and physical inactivity among them. What is good for the heart is, quite literally, good for the brain.
Several measurable blood markers bear directly on cognitive resilience. Poorly controlled blood sugar accelerates small-vessel damage in the brain; type 2 diabetes roughly doubles dementia risk. Untreated thyroid dysfunction can mimic or worsen cognitive symptoms. Vitamin B12 deficiency — common over 60 and in plant-based diets — causes reversible memory and concentration problems that are tragic to miss. Raised homocysteine, cholesterol and inflammation each add vascular strain.
Screening for brain health, therefore, is largely screening for the treatable conditions that erode it. Memory lapses and brain fog in mid-life far more often reflect thyroid, B12, sleep, stress, menopause or metabolic factors than early dementia — and identifying those causes is both reassuring and actionable.
Risk Indicators
- Memory lapses
- Brain fog
- Concentration issues
- Family dementia history

Diagnostic Path
Identifying clinical markers associated with cognitive & brain health requires a high-resolution laboratory profile. Below are the recommended diagnostic assessments specifically calibrated for this concern.
Our Advanced Full Body MOT covers the core brain-relevant panel: HbA1c and glucose, full lipid profile, thyroid function, Vitamin B12 and Folate, Vitamin D and full blood count (anaemia is an under-recognised cause of poor concentration). The Platinum MOTs add inflammation and cardiac markers for a fuller vascular picture. Every result is explained in a written nurse report with clear GP signposting where follow-up would help.
When to See Your GP Urgently
Screening is for people without acute symptoms. If any of the following apply, please seek medical care first:
- Memory loss that disrupts daily life, or getting lost in familiar places — see your GP
- Sudden confusion, slurred speech or one-sided weakness — call 999 (possible stroke)
- Personality change noticed by others — see your GP
- Cognitive symptoms with severe headache or visual change — urgent GP review
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a blood test detect dementia?
No — and we will never suggest otherwise. Dementia diagnosis involves clinical assessment, cognitive testing and often brain imaging through the NHS. What blood testing does well is identify treatable contributors and mimics: B12 deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes and anaemia can all cause cognitive symptoms that improve with treatment.
I have brain fog — what are the common findings?
In our experience and in published literature: low Vitamin D or B12, thyroid imbalance, raised HbA1c, iron deficiency and, frequently, entirely normal results that point instead to sleep, stress or perimenopause. Every one of those outcomes is useful information.
When should I worry about memory lapses?
Occasional forgetfulness — names, why you walked into a room — is normal at every age. Concern rises when memory problems are progressive, noticed by family, or interfere with work and daily function. Those warrant a GP visit; screening can run alongside but should not replace it.
What can I actually do for long-term brain health?
The evidence supports controlling blood pressure and blood sugar, staying physically active, not smoking, moderating alcohol, treating hearing loss, sleeping well and staying socially engaged. Screening tells you which of the metabolic factors need your attention first.
