Private Peripheral

Private Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Screening

The Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) testing, often conducted using the ABI ( Ankle-Brachial Index) test, is a diagnostic procedure designed to examine the condition of the arteries outside the heart, particularly in the limbs. The Ankle-Brachial Index test measures and compares blood pressure in the arm and ankle to assess blood flow to the legs.

This test is available as part of our comprehensive private health check-up packages and can also be added to many of our existing full-body health assessments. Taking proactive steps towards your heart health has never been easier.

What is private PAD testing?

A private PAD test is typically used to diagnose disease of the Peripheral Artery, with the ABI test being the most common method. This non-invasive process evaluates blood flow to the legs by comparing the blood pressure in the arm and the ankle.

During the test, you will lie on your back while our trained healthcare professionals measure your blood pressure in both the upper arm and lower leg. An electronic cuff will be placed on both your arm and leg, gently inflating to measure your pulse and blood pressure. In a healthy circulatory system, the blood pressure in both regions should be closely aligned or nearly identical.

Why should you consider private PAD testing?

A PAD test is essential to a comprehensive full-body health assessment or heart health evaluation. It provides valuable insights into your cardiovascular health and can help detect early signs of potential issues. A PAD test can:

  • Help detect blockages or narrowing of peripheral arteries, which can impact circulation.
  • Offer a detailed look at your overall heart health and identify any concerns before they become serious.
  • Be essential to ongoing health monitoring if you already have a pre-existing heart condition.
  • Enable early detection of heart disease, particularly if you have risk factors or a family history of cardiovascular conditions.
  • Serve as a reference for future health monitoring, allowing you to track changes in your vascular health over time.

PAD test procedure

Getting ready for the test

No special procedure is required before your PAD test. It is recommended that you stay hydrated, as this may assist with the blood pressure measurement. Be sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have a family history of cardiovascular diseases or other risk factors. You are welcome to ask any questions or discuss concerns you may have about the procedure.

The Test Process

The procedure is simple and non-invasive, using a small blood sample. The test is quick, and your healthcare professional will ensure you are comfortable throughout the process. Your blood pressure will be measured using an electronic cuff, which inflates gently around your arm and leg. The readings are then sent to the lab for analysis.

Result collection

Results typically become ready within a few days after the test and are carried out with the utmost confidentiality. If any issues are found, such as abnormal blood pressure readings, our healthcare professional will explain your results in detail and discuss the way forward with you.

Understanding Your Results

The report of your results will be clear and easy to understand without the use of complicated medical terms. You will receive the specific readings for each test conducted, with each result marked as green, amber, or red:

  • Amber signals results slightly outside of the expected range.
  • Green indicates results within the expected range for your age and sex.
  • Red indicates results that are significantly outside the normal range.

If your results fall within the amber or red category, we will provide you with tailored advice on the next steps, which could include lifestyle changes, monitoring the results, or consulting with a healthcare professional for further investigation.
