What does a lung function test entail?

The most common lung function test is spirometry, which measures the volume and speed at which your lungs get filled with and expel air when you breathe.

Taking a spirometry test measures the following:

  • Forced vital capacity: this is a measurement of the air amount you can forcibly and fully expel from your lungs in a single breath.
  • Forced respiratory volume per second: this is a measurement of the amount of air you can forcibly expel per second. Healthy lungs can expel about 70 – 80% of the air in their lungs during this time.
  • Peak expiratory flow (PEF): This is quite different from the above and measures the speed at which you can forcibly breathe out. It evaluates the maximum airflow speed during expiration.
  • Forced expiratory ratio: This is the air ratio expelled in the first second and is taken as a fraction of the total air that is finally expelled after a forced expiration.

Why should you undergo a lung function test?

Taking a spirometry test helps your doctor to judge and diagnose the severity of several lung diseases, such as pulmonary fibrosis, asthma, bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A spirometry test can be used to get an insight into your response to treatment for any of the listed lung conditions.

Body plethysmography

This technique is used to analyse other parts of pulmonary function screening. This involved the patient sitting in a see-through unit with an amount of air volume and pressure, and these units can be adjusted to measure the following:

  • Airway resistance
  • Varying air volume in the lungs
