What is liver fibrosis?

This is a buildup of scar tissues in your liver. The liver produces scar tissue while trying to repair damages, affecting its ability to function properly. Scar tissue limits the flow of blood from and to the liver and also replaces the cells in the liver. This decreased blood flow to your liver causes more scar tissue formation. Tissue scarring might range from mild to moderate and can be treated and reversible to a certain extent. However, long-term scarring can result in irreversible, permanent and life-threatening damage to your liver.

Long-term damage or scarring can cause liver cirrhosis. There is currently no cure for this health condition – liver cirrhosis. However, symptoms of liver cirrhosis can be managed. If you have liver cirrhosis, a liver transplant might be recommended, particularly if it progresses into liver failure.

A liver fibrosis test can help you prevent liver scarring and take proactive steps to manage your liver. This test examines 3 blood markers.

These blood markers include:

  • PIIINP
  • HA
  • TIMP-1

They are all calculated together to calculate your risk of liver scarring (fibrosis).

Symptoms of liver fibrosis

People with liver fibrosis may be asymptomatic, especially when the scarring is mild to moderate. The symptoms become more obvious as the scarring progresses and builds up. You may not identify liver fibrosis until after serious damage.

Some liver fibrosis symptoms include:

  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Fluid buildup in your stomach or legs
  • Jaundice (yellowing of your eyes and skin)
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty in thinking clearly

What causes liver fibrosis?

Liver fibrosis, which is the scarring of your liver, occurs when you have a liver injury or due to liver inflammation. This damage causes your liver to start a self-healing process, and when the liver becomes incapable of self-repair, scarring occurs.

Some liver conditions that may cause liver fibrosis include:

  • Iron overload
  • Hepatitis C
  • Hepatitis B
  • Autoimmune hepatitis
  • Alcohol liver disease, which is a common cause
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Why should you take a liver fibrosis test?

Early detection of liver fibrosis can help you take preventive steps or seek early treatment to prevent liver scarring from developing into severe cirrhosis or fibrosis. During the early stages of liver fibrosis, you have a good chance of treating this condition and reversing some of the damage to your liver.

Early detection and accurate liver fibrosis tests are the best methods for preventing severe liver damage. Progression of liver damage can lead to cirrhosis.
